Let all UUs Be Grateful for the Gift of Generosity

In our consumer culture, we’re accustomed to thinking of gifts as “things,” as “products” of generosity. That way of thinking may not only obscure the many forms a gift may take but also the spiritual nature of generosity. “Generosity,” writes His Holiness the Dalai Lama, “is the natural outward expression of an inner attitude of compassion and loving kindness.” Our Soul Matters theme for November, “The Gift of Generosity,” prompts us to think more broadly and deeply about the nature of generosity: namely, to think of generosity itself as a gift—a spiritual gift that benefits both giver and receiver. This Thanksgiving weekend, with the help of some of our members and friends, we’ll consider the multiple ways we may practice “generosity of spirit” and enjoy its reciprocal benefits
