Minister’s Message – March 2026

Embracing Possibility

Possibilities abound in the world around us: decisions about what to do, where to go, how to use our time and energy and many more. Our monthly Soul Matters theme is to embrace possibility — a concept which just like the possibilities themselves, is numerous. Embracing possibility could mean trying new hobbies, reading a different genre of book, driving an alternate way to school or work, eating unfamiliar foods… The list can go on and on for what possibilities we could look to embrace this month.

The focus I want to bring us to is a more intimate and ultimately, more life changing exercise — embracing the possibility that people you disagree with may be correct. Now, I’m not saying to change your opinion and that you are wrong, just that you/we don’t have a monopoly on truth. April’s spiritual practice is to take on the perspective of someone else. This exercise can be as easy or as difficult as you wish to make it. Think of someone with whom you disagree, and try on their perspective for a little bit. Embrace the possibility that there is truth in how another sees the world.

Depending on how comfortable you are with this mental exercise determines how deep you want to go. Will you engage with a difference in color preference? Or maybe you feel able to try on a different perspective about politics or theology. Embracing the possibility of another way of thinking can be challenging. Treat yourself and others with care. For some specifics about seeing things differently and an online game to get started, see here: psychkit.org/insight-articles/perspective-play.

Seeing the world from another person’s perspective helps us be more understanding, empathetic and loving. I would be honored to have you share your perspective with me!
