We Unitarian Universalists can be uncomfortable with traditional religious terminology. We often have difficulty, sometimes even resist, integrating language central to those traditions into our own belief system and spiritual practice. “Oh,” we say, shaking our heads, “that language come with so much baggage!” One such example is the word prayer. But building on the ACTS concept of prayer in Christian belief and practice (A=awe and wonder, C=contrition, T=thanks giving, and S=supplication), we’ll unpack the baggage to look at the essential nature of prayer and how we Unitarian Universalists can—and actually do!—incorporate prayer into our belief system and spiritual practice.
