Reveres the Past

Hymn #145 in our hymnal “As Tranquil Streams” states that our religion has “a freedom that reveres the past, but trusts the dawning future more”. What does it mean to honor our past while trusting our future? Maybe it means listening to and learning from past errors and correcting mistakes. October 14 was Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a holiday which – in many places – has supplanted Columbus Day. This Sunday we will explore our institutional and personal pasts with both reverence and critique.
