Since 1966, Kwanzaa has been celebrated in the U.S. during the December holiday season. Sydney Lewis, a fellow UU from our neighboring Lower Bucks County Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, will help us better understand the context in which Kwanzaa was established, its purposes, its Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba), its connection to similar celebrations, and how it’s typically observed. She will also share personal experiences celebrating the holiday.
Lewis earned her Master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Education as well as a BA in Africana Studies and Hispanic Languages and Literature from the University. She has worked in schools both as a teacher and administrator, served on the Human Relations Committee in the city of New Orleans, and participates in a variety of nonprofit and social justice work as well.
