Safe Congregation Interest Group Formation

As an educator for 30 years, I once held the position of co-chair/building representative for our district-wide Safe Schools Committee. We developed and implemented district policies (across eight elementary and three middle schools), which would keep our schools, staff, and students safe. We accomplished this with input from local law enforcement, building representatives, and community members. These across-the-district policies made it possible for administrators, educators, and support staff (and even transferring students) to adhere to replicated safety/security practices throughout the eleven schools and our administrative buildings.

Last year, I engaged in brief discussions with several fellowship members regarding my concerns, (and subsequent thoughts) on addressing the need for a Safe Congregation Committee at TPUUF. At the April Board meeting, my two-page proposal was shared with the members. The proposal serves as a framework for the establishment of a safety committee within the congregation to proactively address and mitigate potential risks, ensuring a safe and secure environment for all TPUUF members and guests. The Board has expressed an interest in moving ahead with this action.

The committee will be responsible for:
~ developing and implementing safety protocols,
~ providing education and training, and
~ responding to emergencies.

With this forward-thinking action, the congregation can minimize risks, build trust, and provide a more welcoming and comfortable space for worship and fellowship. The dedicated committee will be diverse, including members with relevant skills like first aid, security, former experience, and legal knowledge. If you are interested in participating in such an endeavor (or would like to read the proposal), please get in touch with me.

Sincerely,
Sheila M Sangmeister
