Braiding Belief, Morality and Democracy

The UU 5th Principle states, “The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.” Inspiring and beautiful in theory; yet in practice, democracy is mired in conflict, beset by divisions, and inflamed by ardent animosity. Given these circumstances, how do we uphold our commitment to this noble principle especially when political stakes are high and our opposition seems morally mistaken and cognitively flawed? Why should we sustain democratic relations with political foes who threaten our beliefs and with those whom we perceive to be against us in our democratic organizations? Is it possible to cultivate a conscience to maneuver through the challenges inherent in democracy and constructively further the democratic process? Drawing from the book, Sustaining Democracy by political philosopher, Robert Talisse, Jeana and Lorraine will explore these questions and more!
