Paine and Slavery

Thomas Paine was a life-long abolitionist, but few historians correctly identify it. 90% of his works were anonymously written, including his anti-slavery writings and activities. This talk will explore the parameters and key works that show Paine to be a driving force for abolition, even though he did not write “African Slavery in America.”

Gary Berton, who spoke here last February, is current president of the Thomas Paine National Historical Association and a member of the Thomas Paine Memorial Association. He is also associate editor of The Collected Works of Thomas Paine project.
