We welcome Dane Tilghman, a local artist who is hailed as one of the premier painters of the African American experience. He will describe his journey dotted with personal wisdom reaped from his experiences. He describes his art as “… a compilation of lives past for their contribution to the human experience. Although many of the people I paint are not famous or well known, deep in our soul we are connected to them. They lived their lives as we live now and they have been where we are yet to go.”
From the daily life of African Americans to the world of sports and music, Dane Tilghman’s artwork has been displayed in galleries and exhibitions throughout the United States including Philadelphia’s Afro-American Historical and Cultural Museum. His artwork is in the Baseball Hall of Fame Museum in Cooperstown, and he created a baseball mural for Atlanta’s Turner’s Stadium. His work has appeared in Sports Illustrated, scholastic books published by McGraw-Hill, the Western Journal of Black Studies, and on the popular TV shows, The Cosby Show and Roseanne. Among his numerous awards is the prestigious the Medal of Honor in Graphics from the American Artists Professional League.
