Minister’s Message – August 2026

One of the great things about Unitarian Universalism is also one of its biggest challenges. Our religion claims many sources of inspiration — from sacred texts to personal experience and everything in between (read more here). Added to the variety is the fact that each individual goes on their own search for truth and meaning, engaging with whichever spiritual inspiration resonates with them. We are left with the amazing breadth of infinity from which to glean religious meaning. Other faiths limit inspiration to a set of books or a number of prophets — not so with Unitarian Universalism. We have a lot of freedom, but also a daunting task. Where does one begin, where does one spend more time or less time and energy?

As a minister, the question of where to focus on spiritual inspiration is constantly present. I write monthly newsletter articles (like this one) and a main part of my job is to create and lead worship services — a time set aside to provide space for spiritual inspiration and possibly transformation. When picking specific topics and sources, I am generally guided by Soul Matters, a national network of congregations who follow monthly ministry themes (see the upcoming themes here). But the themes are purposely created to be broad, and I’m not always bound by them.

Which brings me to a question I have for all of you — yes, even you! Whether you serve on the board, are a life-long member, first time reader/visitor, friend, live far
away, no longer attend but get the newsletter… or anywhere in between — I would like your input! What idea do you want to hear more about? Maybe there is a book which inspired or challenged you, a poem that speaks to you, a topic you are curious about… What idea, word, question, story, movie, phrase, topic do you want to engage with? Take a moment to fill out this online form or write me a note, call or text me or meet in person for coffee or tea.

In our shared ministry, you can help provide inspiration!

As a note — please remember that my summer schedule is quite sporadic. My normal “office days” are on hold until the fall — but don’t be worried, I’m still around. I’m happy to make time and can be reached via phone (412-327-3731) or e-mail (minister@tpuuf.org).

With open heart and mind,
Rev. Andrew L. Weber
